Yilin Verse

膠車木馬,不利遠賈;出門為患,安止得全。

A glued cart and a wooden horse, ill-suited for distant trade; stepping through the gate brings misfortune -- better to stay and be kept whole.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind over earth observes a merchant setting out with useless equipment. A cart glued together and a wooden horse — neither can withstand the rigors of distant trade. Venturing out brings nothing but trouble; staying put preserves one's safety. The glue-cart and wooden horse are vivid symbols of inadequate preparation: form without function, appearance without substance. Fire over earth forms Progress, where brightness emerges above the horizon. From Contemplation to Progress, the contrast is instructive: Progress demands genuine capacity rising from solid ground, but this traveler possesses only imitations. Advancement built on false foundations — the glued joint, the carved steed — collapses at the first test of the road.
