Yilin Verse

過時不行,妄逐王公;老女失度,不安其居。

Missing the proper time, failing to act; vainly chasing lords and dukes. The aging woman has lost her measure -- she cannot rest in peace.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind over earth watches someone miss the moment and pursue the wrong quarry. The right time passes but no action is taken; instead, one chases vainly after lords and princes. An aging woman has lost her proper measure and cannot remain settled in her dwelling. The verse layers temporal failure with social overreach: missing the season for appropriate action, then compounding the error by grasping at status beyond one's station. Fire over lake forms Opposition, where flame rises and water sinks — two forces that see each other but move apart. From Contemplation to Opposition, observation reveals irreconcilable divergence: the pursuer and the pursued move in opposite directions, and the aging woman's restlessness only deepens the estrangement.
