Yilin Verse

天所顧祐,禍災不至。安吉不懼。

What heaven looks upon with favor, calamity and disaster cannot reach. At peace, auspicious, and unafraid.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind over earth and heaven extends its protective gaze. What heaven watches over and blesses, no disaster can reach. Peace and auspiciousness prevail; there is nothing to fear. The verse is brief and absolute — a declaration of divine protection so total it needs no elaboration. Fire over wind forms the Cauldron, which transforms raw materials into refined nourishment through the proper application of heat. From Contemplation to the Cauldron, observation becomes consecration: the gaze of Contemplation, when aligned with heaven's own attention, creates the sacred vessel of the Cauldron. What is observed with devotion and offered upward becomes the refined substance that sustains civilization. Divine protection is not passive but active — heaven's gaze is the fire that refines.
