Yilin Verse

積德不怠,遇主逢時;載喜渭陽,身受榮光。

Amassing virtue without ceasing, one meets the sovereign at the destined hour; bearing joy at the north bank of the Wei -- the body receives glory and light.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind over earth closes the cycle with a vision of long-deferred reward. Accumulating virtue without weariness, one finally meets the right lord at the right time. Joy is borne forth at the Wei River's sunny bank, and the body receives glorious honor. The 'Wei Yang' alludes to the Shijing ode where the young Duke Kang of Qin escorts his uncle Chong Er back to his homeland, thinking of his deceased mother. The poem became a byword for timely reunion after long separation. Fire over water forms Before Completion, where elements have not yet found their final places. From Contemplation to Before Completion, the irony is hopeful: though the crossing is not yet finished, the accumulated virtue has already attracted its reward. The light is visible above the water.
