Commentary
Mountain upon earth decays into fire blazing in heaven — Great Possession, the hexagram of abundance under illumination. Courtyard torches blaze through the night, chasing the last daylight. But yang is too soft to govern, and yin grows bold in its seat of power. The 'courtyard fire' (ting liao) is a ritual night-flame lit during Zhou court audiences to extend the working day — a sign of diligent governance. Yet the verse reverses its promise: the fire burns not to illuminate but to compensate for a weakening sun. The ruler's light fades while dark forces strengthen unopposed. From Splitting Apart to Great Possession, the mountain's erosion exposes abundant resources, but without strong governance the fire merely reveals how much there is to lose. Brilliance without authority is an invitation to usurpers.
