Yilin Verse

東行飲酒,與喜相抱,福吾家利,來從父母,水澤之徒,望邑而處。

Traveling east to drink wine; embracing joy together. Fortune blesses my family; coming home to father and mother. People of the marshes and lakes; gazing toward the town, they settle.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Water upon water, yet the east brings celebration. Traveling eastward to drink wine, one embraces joy directly — blessings come to the household, returning from father and mother. Those who dwell by water and marshes look toward the town and settle nearby. The verse radiates contentment: wine, reunion, familial blessing, and a view of civilized settlement from the waterside. From The Abysmal to The Arousing, doubled water transforms into doubled thunder — the energy that was flowing and dangerous now shakes the ground with awakening force. The eastward journey toward joy matches Thunder's direction (east in the trigram family), and the drinking of wine celebrates the arousing moment when dormant life stirs into action.
