Yilin Verse

泉起崑崙,東出玉門,流為九河,無有憂患。

Springs arise from Kunlun; flowing east through the Jade Gate. Branching into the Nine Rivers; free from worry and trouble.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Doubled fire meets wind and thunder together: brilliance flows outward in generous increase. Springs rise at Kunlun, flow eastward through the Jade Gate, and branch into the Nine Rivers, bringing no calamity. The verse traces the mythological course of the Yellow River from its legendary source at Mount Kunlun through the Jade Gate Pass and into the nine channels that irrigate the Central Plains. This is pure beneficence: water flowing from the highest source to nourish the widest territory. From The Clinging to Increase, fire's radiance joins wind and thunder in a vision of boundless expansion. The transformation shows that true increase begins at the source and flows downward by natural law, unstoppable and beneficial to all it touches.
