Trigram Changes
Yilin Verse
因禍致福,喜盈其室。
Through disaster, fortune is found; joy fills the household.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind and thunder bestow increase, and the transformation leads to doubled fire — the radiant clarity of the Clinging. Through disaster, blessings are achieved; joy fills the household. The verse is the shortest in this batch yet carries one of the most potent messages: the alchemical reversal where catastrophe becomes the very instrument of fortune. 'Through misfortune, arriving at blessing' is a cornerstone of Yijing philosophy — the turning point embedded within every extreme. From Increase to the Clinging, the doubled brightness emerges precisely from the darkness that preceded it. Fire clinging to fire creates illumination that reaches all directions. The great person uses this continuing brightness to shine upon the four quarters, and what began as calamity is transmuted into lasting joy.
