Nine at the beginning means: Darkening of the light during flight. He lowers his wings. The superior man does not eat for three days On his wanderings. But he has somewhere to go. The host has occasion to gossip about him.

A dwelling where wolves and tigers lair; one cannot reside there. It becomes my grief and worry.

Commentary
Fire descends beneath the earth while the mountain hides within the earth — Modesty, where what is great keeps itself low. The verse presents a predator's lair: 'Where wolves and tigers dwell, one cannot reside; they breed my worry and sorrow.' This is a place made uninhabitable by predatory forces, a direct echo of the Darkening of the Light's political landscape where tyrants like King Zhou of Shang made the court a den of beasts. From Darkening of the Light to Modesty, the transformation prescribes the proper response to such danger: withdraw, keep low, and let the mountain's hidden mass work silently. One cannot fight wolves in their own den; one must level the ground through patient modesty.
