Yilin Verse
出門懷憂,東上禍丘。與凶相遇,自為災患。
He steps out the door bearing worry; eastward he climbs the hill of disaster. He meets with misfortune; by his own hand, calamity is made.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind from fire should guide the family outward with purpose, but here departure brings only anxiety. Stepping through the gate, the heart is filled with worry. Heading east, one climbs the hill of misfortune. Encountering evil, one becomes the author of one's own disaster. The verse maps a spatial progression of doom: out the door, uphill, and straight into calamity — each step deepening the trouble. The 'hill of misfortune' suggests a place from which there is no easy return. From The Family to Breakthrough, the lake rises above heaven in a dramatic upward surge. Breakthrough demands resolute action to remove what is harmful; but this verse shows someone who charges forward without discernment, breaking through into disaster rather than liberation.
