Yilin Verse

禹召諸神,會稽南山。執玉萬國,天下康安。

Yu summons the spirits; assembling at Kuaiji, the southern mountain. Ten thousand states present their jade; all under heaven is peaceful and secure.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Mountain above lake transforms into fire above mountain — the Wanderer, where the traveler passes through foreign lands with cautious discernment. Yu the Great summons the assembled spirits to Mount Kuaiji in the south. Ten thousand states present their jade tribute; all under heaven rests in peace and security. According to tradition, Yu convened the feudal lords at Kuaiji to establish order after taming the floods — the supreme act of legitimate assembly. From Decrease to the Wanderer, the lake ignites as fire atop the mountain, illuminating the landscape for the sojourner. The Wanderer suggests transience, yet Yu's gathering at Kuaiji transforms wandering into arrival. Decrease's sacrifice — Yu's legendary years of selfless toil, passing his own door three times without entering — earns the right to convene the world at a single mountain.
