Yilin Verse
皋陶聽理,岐伯悅喜。西登華道,東歸无咎。
Gao Yao attends to justice; Qi Bo is pleased and glad. Ascending west on the road to Hua; returning east without fault.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Fire on the mountain, and two legendary ministers of justice preside over a harmonious age. Gao Yao, the sage-judge of Shun's court, hears cases with impartial clarity, while Qi Bo, the Yellow Emperor's physician, rejoices at the people's well-being. The verse then traces a journey: ascending westward along the Hua mountain road, then returning eastward without mishap. The wanderer who travels under the protection of just governance and wise counsel can venture far and return safely. From The Wanderer to Decrease, the mountain towers above the lake, and the wise man restrains his anger and curbs desire. The sage-ministers' work is itself a form of Decrease: by cutting away injustice and disease, they make the whole system lighter and more just.
