Yilin Verse
日中明德,盛興兩國。仁聖會遇,君受其福,臣多榮祿。
The sun at zenith, radiant in virtue; two kingdoms rise in splendor. The humane sage meets his match; the lord receives his blessing, the ministers share abundant glory.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wood grows within the earth as bright virtue shines at midday, raising two states to simultaneous greatness. A benevolent sage meets his counterpart in governance; the ruler receives blessings while ministers enjoy abundant rank and generous rewards. The 'two states' likely evoke the Zhou founding partnership of King Wen's civil virtue and King Wu's martial completion, or the complementary strengths of allied kingdoms flourishing under shared moral clarity. Heaven over lake, the image of Treading, shows proper hierarchy where each person knows their place. From Pushing Upward to Treading, organic growth achieves its full expression in ceremonial order. The ascending wood becomes the measured step that treads upon established ground with confidence.
