Yilin Verse
伯夷叔齊,貞廉之師。以德防患,憂禍不存。

Commentary
Thunder over lake settles into earth over lake: the maiden's restless energy meets Approach's steady, expansive advance. The original verse reads: 'Boyi and Shuqi, teachers of integrity and purity. With virtue they guarded against calamity; worry and misfortune did not touch them.' The brothers who refused to eat Zhou grain and starved on Mount Shouyang rather than compromise their loyalty to Shang represent principle taken to its ultimate extreme. From the Marrying Maiden to Approach, where earth rests broadly over the lake, the transformation emphasizes authority that advances through moral example rather than force. Approach's image counsels boundless generosity in teaching and protecting the people. Boyi and Shuqi's uncompromising virtue radiates outward, approaching others through the gravity of their example alone.
