Yilin Verse

仁政之德,恭恭日息。成都就邑,人受厥福。

The virtue of benevolent rule, reverent and ceaseless. The city is built, the settlement complete; the people receive its blessings.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Fire on the mountain, and a realm flourishes under benevolent rule. The virtue of humane governance spreads daily in reverent practice. Cities are established, settlements completed, and the people receive their blessings. This is the wanderer who has finally arrived: the traveler who plants roots, builds community, and governs with care. The phrase 'cheng du jiu yi' (成都就邑) — 'completing the capital, establishing the settlement' — evokes the founding of a permanent home after long journeying. From The Wanderer to Approach, earth opens above the lake in generous welcome. Approach's meaning is the arrival of benevolent authority, drawing near to the people. The wanderer's journey culminates not in further travel but in the act of settling down and nourishing those around him.
