Yilin Verse
左輔右弼,金玉滿匱。常盈不亡,富如廒倉。
Counselors left and right; gold and jade fill the chests. Ever full, never lost; rich as a brimming granary.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Water hidden within the earth is flanked by loyal ministers on left and right, and gold and jade fill the coffers to overflowing. The treasury never empties; wealth rivals the great granaries. The verse paints a picture of institutional prosperity at its peak: competent advisers on both sides, resources abundant and continuously replenished. 'Left guardian, right assistant' is a standard formula for a fully staffed court. From The Army to the Marrying Maiden, thunder moves above the lake in a union that must be carefully managed. The army's wealth and counsel suggest a bride entering a powerful household with a full dowry — the arrangement succeeds because both sides bring real substance to the pairing.
