地中生木，升之象。西戎獯鬻，病於我國——西方戎狄之獯鬻反覆侵擾，為我國之大患。扶陝之岐，以保乾德——據守陝、岐之險要關隘，以保天之正德、國之根本。獯鬻為西周邊境之游牧劫掠者，其騷擾考驗國家數代之韌性，逼使決策者在冒進與固守之間抉擇。兼山為艮（君子以思不出其位），雙山靜止、知止之象。從升至艮，上升之勢至此須止——面對蠻族之潮，最明智之回應非盲目前進而為堅守關隘、蓄養實力，以山之靜勝寇之躁。升之道有時在於知止而止。
