注释
木上有水，井賴適器方能汲取，器不當則功盡廢。鉛刀攻玉，堅不可得——鉛性軟而玉性堅，以至鈍之器攻至堅之材，費盡力氣而毫無所獲。單盡我力，齒為疾賊——力氣耗盡，反傷自身，牙齒崩裂而為害。鉛刀攻玉為古喻：器不當材則徒勞，小才強任大事則自損——非材不美，乃器不配。從井至咸（山上有澤），君子以虛受人。咸之感應須兩造相匹：山與澤相感以通，然鉛刀與玉無親和力可言。強行接觸徒增其害，不如退而換器，方為智舉。
