山上有木為漸，雲上於天為需。交侵如亂，民無所依，混戰紛繁。追敵濟西渡河，敵陣終潰。詩描一場亂中取勝之役：先經混亂，後以等待與定力克敵。從漸至需，循序漸進之功化為雲天之上的從容等候。需卦之義在於險前不躁，飲食宴樂以待天時。渡河追擊之所以成功，正因時機成熟。漸之穩進與需之耐候相契：敵自敗，不必急攻。
