地中有水，師之象。子畏於匡——孔子被匡人圍困，因貌似陽虎遭誤認。厄困陳蔡——又困於陳蔡之間，絕糧七日。德行不危，竟脫厄害——德行不搖，終脫險境。直引孔子兩大困厄：匡之圍，孔子曰「天之未喪斯文也」；陳蔡之厄，弟子慍怒而夫子弦歌不輟。從師至鼎（木上有火），火在風上，將生材化為文明之養。聖人之德是精煉苦難為千古教化之火。
