Yilin Verse
蝦䗫群聚,從天請雨。雲雷疾聚,應時輒下。得其願所。
Toads gather in a swarm; from heaven they petition for rain. Clouds and thunder quickly mass; at the right moment it pours down. Their wish is obtained.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Lake over wind rises into earth above wind — Pushing Upward, the gradual ascent of wood through earth. Toads gather in swarms and pray to heaven for rain. Clouds and thunder assemble swiftly, and the rain falls in answer at the appointed time. One's wish is granted. The verse presents a charming folk image: toads massing together, their collective croaking a prayer to the sky, and heaven responding with timely rain. The correspondence between petition and response is immediate and satisfying. From Great Exceeding to Pushing Upward, the waterlogged beam dries as moisture is redistributed properly. What was excess becomes nourishment when channeled through the earth. The toads' prayer succeeds because it aligns with nature's own rhythm — Pushing Upward's patient, organic growth, not forced but invited by collective effort.
