Yilin Verse

鷹飛雉退,兔伏不起。弧張狼鳴,野雞飛驚。

The hawk soars, the pheasant retreats; the rabbit crouches, daring not rise. The bow is drawn and the wolf howls; the wild pheasant startles into flight.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Fire above the lake, and the hunting field erupts with predatory energy. A hawk swoops and the pheasant retreats; a rabbit crouches frozen, unable to rise. The bow is drawn and the wolf howls as wild roosters burst from cover in terror. Every creature occupies its role in the food chain: the strong strike, the weak scatter. The verse captures raw natural power operating without negotiation — pure dominance in the animal kingdom. From Opposition to Great Power, thunder roars above heaven, and the gentleman treads only the path of propriety. The transformation channels brute force through ritual restraint: the thunder's might is real, but the gentleman's power lies in knowing where not to step. Great Power unchecked becomes mere predation.
