Yilin Verse
二政多門,君失其權。三家專制,禍起季孫。
Two governments, many gates; the ruler has lost his power. Three families hold control; disaster arises from the house of Ji.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Fire above water, and authority has fragmented. Two administrations govern through multiple gates; the lord has lost his sovereign power. Three great families monopolize control, and disaster springs from the Jisun clan. This is a direct reference to the Three Huan of Lu — the Jisun, Mengsun, and Shusun families who usurped ducal authority for nearly three centuries during the Spring and Autumn period. Confucius himself served under the Jisun clan and lamented their overreach. From Before Completion to the Gentle, fire-over-water transforms into doubled wind — persistent, penetrating influence. The Gentle is the hexagram of commands being issued and carried out. The verse's tragedy is that the commands now come from three sources instead of one; the wind scatters rather than penetrates.
