山附於地為剝，水在火上為既濟。心多畏惡——心中充滿恐懼與厭惡。時愁自懼——時常憂愁自懼。雖有小咎，終無大悔——雖有小過，終無大悔。此詩捕捉既濟之心理：一切各就其位，然頹勢之預感令人惴惴不安。非外在之災禍，而是內心之焦慮——知已成者必將散。從剝至既濟，山之剝蝕意外地產生短暫之均衡，水火各安其位。然此均衡脆弱，當事人心知肚明。「思患而豫防之」——既濟之教在居安思危。怕而無大悔，正是謹慎者之福。
