A bird tries to fly without wings; a rabbit runs with broken legs. Though they wish to meet and join, they cannot attain what they desire.

注释
山下出泉，蒙之象也。鳥飛無翼，兔走折足——鳥欲飛而無羽，兔欲奔而腿斷。雖欲會同而未得所欲——渴望聚合而不可得。在最需要能力之時，能力被剝奪殆盡。從蒙至漸，山上有木：漸者，循序漸進，居賢德善俗。然此人連起步之基本條件都不具備——無翼無足，何以漸進？漸之道需基礎；無工具則無發展。蒙昧者於此悟得：進步之前須先具備進步之資，否則渴望再切也只是空想。
