上九 鳥焚其巢。旅人先笑後號咷。喪牛于易。凶。
Nine at the top means: The bird's nest burns up. The wanderer laughs at first, Then must needs lament and weep. Through carelessness he loses his cow. Misfortune.

注释
山上有火，然素車木馬不能負重。素車——未漆之車，木馬——喪葬之偶，皆為祭品而非實用之物。以此出征，「憂危為咎」——危殆自招。王子以虛有其表之裝備行真實之戰事，敗局可期。此警不以實力而以虛飾行事者。從旅至明夷（明入地中），光明沉入大地，刻意隱晦。王子之征伐失敗因從未具備真正之裝備——照路之光被偽裝所掩，旅人以冥器行軍，何能不敗？
