地上有水，比也，本利婚配。南國少子，方略美好——南方之佳公子，才貌雙全。求我長女——來求娶長女。薄賤不與——嫌其微薄而不許。反得醜惡，後乃大悔——反而娶得醜婦，事後深悔。詩為社會誤判之寓言：以勢利眼光拒絕良配，終得更劣者。從比至漸（山上有木），漸示關係之循序漸進——如鴻雁之有序求偶。漸勸以耐心與禮數。詩示一旦拋棄此道——草率判斷生出長久之悔。
